DIY Union Jack Wooden Chair Makeover

For the lonfest time, my mum had this grubby old wooden chair.

It's a kids chair so it's small but it's cute!

I've had it for a few months now and I can't remember if it was me or my mum who picked it up from someone who was going to throw it away so it forevermore lived in my room.

The poor thing has been doodled on and scuffed and not very well looked after so I thought it was time to give it a little makeover.

Last night, on a whim I decided that I wanted to do something with this.

With the Queen and her Diamond Jubilee coming up, I was inspired to some something patriotic. I had ideas of pretty flowers, 'ombre' legs or stripes but the idea of having a union jack seat just was at the forefront of my mind. I had to!

You will need:

• A wooden chair
• Sandpaper
• White paint (I used spray paint for this project because I had that available)
• Paint in the colours of your choice

As you can see, the chair is in the most awful condition. It definitely needed a makeover and I decided to do this one quick.

Step one: prep the wood

Looking back, I should have sanded down the chair first to give the paint a better and smoother surface to grip to but since it was white, I just cleaned it and painted over with a couple of coats of white paint.

Step two: paint

Since I had white spray paint available to me, I went straight into spraying the chair white. The paint covered really well with a nice even layer and it looked a thousand times better than it was to begin with already.

Painting the union jack on the chair was a lot of fun. I went for a let's say... "rustic-home-made" look with the rough lines and not-so-straight lines. I like the way it turned out and it has a little character.

I would have liked a less streaky look but I live with little ones who use this chair on a daily basis so it might need a repaint in the future.

This DIY didn't take me long and though there are lots of things I'd do better next time, it's better than what it started off with for the time being.
